As of December 8th, 2024, Lake Okeechobee's water level sits at 15.56 feet NGVD. Now, that's a tad lower than this time last year (15.84 feet) and even more so than two years ago (16.43 feet). We're still a smidge above the historical average for this date, which is 14.76 feet.
Lake Okeechobee Weather Forecast
Hold onto your hats, folks, because we've got a mixed bag of weather coming our way this week! Expect some broken clouds and mild temperatures around 75 degrees Fahrenheit to start the week. But don't get too comfy, because Wednesday brings a chance of light rain and a drop in temperature down to a chilly 57 degrees. By the weekend, we're back to sunshine and pleasant temperatures in the low 70s. Remember, wind can pick up quickly on the lake, so always check the forecast before heading out.
Lake Okeechobee Fishing Forecast
Now, let's talk fishing! With the water level slightly above average and these temperature swings, the fish are in for a ride. Here's the lowdown:
Bass Fishing
Bass fishing should be pretty darn good this week. The lower water levels will concentrate the bass in the remaining vegetation, making them easier to target. Look for them in the Kissimmee grass and along the edges of the hydrilla. Topwater frogs and swim jigs will be your best bet early in the morning, while flipping and pitching creature baits will work well later in the day.
Crappie Fishing
Crappie are starting to school up for the winter, so now's the time to break out the minnows and jigs. Focus your efforts around deeper water brush piles and submerged trees. Vertical jigging with small jigs tipped with minnows is a surefire way to entice these tasty panfish.
Bluegill Fishing
Bluegill fishing can still be productive this time of year, especially on warmer days. Look for them in shallow water near lily pads and other vegetation. Small crickets, worms, and beetle spins will all tempt these feisty little fighters.
Captain Joe's Tips
Here are a few extra nuggets of wisdom from yours truly:
- With the water level lower than last year, be extra cautious navigating the lake. Hidden obstacles can sneak up on you!
- Dress in layers, as the temperature can fluctuate throughout the day.
- Don't forget your polarized sunglasses! They'll help you spot those lurking bass and crappie.
Well, there you have it, folks! Get out there and enjoy some fine Lake Okeechobee fishing. And remember, always wear your life jacket and keep a tight line!
