Howdy folks, Captain Joe here, bringing you your daily fishing report for Lake Okeechobee. Been fishin’ these waters for longer than I care to admit, and I’m here to tell you what’s bitin’ and what ain’t.

Lake Okeechobee Water Levels and Weather

The latest data shows the lake level at 11.14 feet NGVD. That’s down a hair from yesterday (11.15 feet), and a good bit lower than last year (12.69 feet) and two years ago (14.04 feet). We’re still below the period of record average, sitting about 2.02 feet below. Navigation depths are Route 1 at 5.08′ and Route 2 at 3.28′.

Looks like we’re in for some rain today. The forecast calls for moderate rain with about 3.95 inches expected. Wind’s comin’ out of the east-southeast (around 101 degrees) at about 12 mph, with gusts up to 23 mph. Temperatures will be in the low 80s during the day and mid 70s at night.

How This Affects the Fishing

This rain is gonna stir things up, folks. Here’s how it’ll impact your favorite catches:

Bass Fishing

The rain will likely push bass into shallower cover. Look for them around Kissimmee grass, lily pads, and any submerged vegetation. Topwater lures early in the morning and late in the evening could be productive. As the day goes on, switch to flipping jigs or using Texas-rigged worms around heavy cover. The key will be finding areas with cleaner water runoff.

Crappie Fishing

Crappie might be a bit more scattered with the rain. Try fishing around deeper brush piles and submerged structures. Minnows and jigs are always a good bet. With the wind, you might want to use a heavier jig to keep your line down.

Catfish Fishing

Catfish love a good rain! The increased runoff brings more food into the lake. Set up your lines with stink bait or cut bait near creek mouths and areas with muddy bottoms. They’ll be feeding aggressively.

   * On 11 May 1999, Lake Okeechobee Elevation was switched from
     Instantaneous 2400 value to an average-daily lake average.
     On 14 Mar 2001, due to the isolation of various gages within the standard
     10 stations, the average of the interior 4 station gages was used
     as the Lake Okeechobee Elevation.
     On 05 November 2010,  Lake Okeechobee Elevation was switched to a 9 gage
     mix of interior and edge gages to obtain a more reliable representation
     of the lake level.
     On 09 May 2011,  Lake Okeechobee Elevation was switched to a 8 gage
     mix of interior and edge gages to obtain a more reliable representation
     of the lake level due to isolation of S135 from low lake levels.
     Today Lake Okechobee elevation is determined from the 4 Int & 4 Edge stations
