   * On 11 May 1999, Lake Okeechobee Elevation was switched from
     Instantaneous 2400 value to an average-daily lake average.
     On 14 Mar 2001, due to the isolation of various gages within the standard
     10 stations, the average of the interior 4 station gages was used
     as the Lake Okeechobee Elevation.
     On 05 November 2010,  Lake Okeechobee Elevation was switched to a 9 gage
     mix of interior and edge gages to obtain a more reliable representation
     of the lake level.
     On 09 May 2011,  Lake Okeechobee Elevation was switched to a 8 gage
     mix of interior and edge gages to obtain a more reliable representation
     of the lake level due to isolation of S135 from low lake levels.
     Today Lake Okechobee elevation is determined from the 4 Int & 4 Edge stations

The lake level is sitting at 11.15 feet, which is down from last year (12.66 feet) and significantly lower than two years ago (14.04 feet). We’re also below the period of record average. Keep an eye on those navigation depths if you’re running a bigger boat.

The forecast calls for rain, about 3.3mm, and winds around 13 mph gusting to 20 mph. The high will be around 85 degrees Fahrenheit, with lows in the mid 70s. Typical summer weather here on the Big O.

Fishing Outlook

With the lake level lower than usual, expect the fish to be concentrated in areas with good cover and deeper water. The incoming rain could stir things up a bit, potentially improving the bite, but the wind might make it tough to get around.

Bass Fishing

The bass fishing will likely be best in the Kissimmee River and around the grass lines. Look for areas where the wind is pushing baitfish. Topwater action early in the morning could be good, especially after the rain. As the day warms up, switch to flipping jigs and worms in the thick stuff. With the lower water levels, targeting the outside grass edges with moving baits like spinnerbaits and chatterbaits can be productive.

Crappie Fishing

The crappie should be holding around submerged structure and deeper channels. Minnows and jigs are your best bet. The bridges and deeper canals are always worth a try. With the wind, drifting can be tough, so consider anchoring or using a trolling motor to stay on productive spots.

Other Species

Don’t forget about the bluegill and shellcracker! They’ll be bedding in the shallows, making them easy targets for anglers using crickets and worms. Catfish can be found in the deeper holes and channels, especially after the rain. Use stink bait or cut bait for the best results.

Captain Joe’s Tip of the Day

With the wind picking up, pay close attention to your boat control. Use your trolling motor to your advantage and don’t be afraid to move around until you find a sheltered spot where the fish are biting. Safety first, folks!
