Lake Okeechobee Fishing Report for April 16, 2025
Howdy folks, Captain Joe here with your Lake Okeechobee fishing report for April 16, 2025. The lake level is currently at 12.00 feet NGVD, which is a good bit lower than last year’s 14.83 feet and the 2023 level of 14.23 feet on this date. It’s also almost two feet below the historical average for this time of year (13.99 feet). This lower water level is definitely something to keep in mind as we head into the spring fishing season.
Weather Impact on Fishing
The weather forecast for today calls for partly cloudy skies with a high of 81°F (27°C) and a low of 66°F (19°C). Winds will be out of the west-northwest at around 10 mph (16 kph). This moderate breeze should make for comfortable fishing conditions, but it might also stir up the lake a bit, especially in open water areas. Be prepared for slightly choppy conditions and adjust your fishing techniques accordingly.
Fishing Forecast by Species
With the lower water levels, finding fish might require a bit more effort. Focus your fishing around areas with remaining vegetation, drop-offs, and canal mouths. Here’s a breakdown by species:
Largemouth Bass
Bass fishing should still be good, but the lower water will concentrate the fish. Look for them in deeper holes, along the edges of vegetation, and near submerged structure. Flipping and pitching creature baits or Texas-rigged worms around heavy cover should be productive. Spinnerbaits and crankbaits can also be effective for covering water and locating schools of bass.
Crappie
Crappie fishing can be excellent in the spring. With the lower water, focus on deeper areas around brush piles, submerged trees, and bridge pilings. Minnows and small jigs are the go-to baits for crappie. Try using a slip bobber to suspend your bait at the right depth.
Bluegill and Shellcracker
Bluegill and shellcracker fishing should be picking up as the water warms. Look for them in shallower areas with sandy bottoms and scattered vegetation. Worms, crickets, and small beetle spins are all effective baits. A light line and small hook will increase your chances of success.
Catfish
Catfish are always a good option on Lake Okeechobee. They can be found in a variety of habitats, from shallow flats to deeper channels. Use cut bait, chicken livers, or stink bait for the best results. Bottom fishing with a heavy sinker is the most common technique.
Tips for Fishing in Lower Water Conditions
- Focus on areas with remaining vegetation, drop-offs, and canal mouths.
- Use your electronics to locate submerged structure and fish holding areas.
- Downsize your baits and presentations to match the lower water conditions.
- Be patient and persistent, as finding fish might require more effort.
