Lake Okeechobee Fishing Report – April 17, 2025
Howdy folks, Captain Joe here with your Lake Okeechobee fishing report for today, April 17, 2025. The lake level is currently at 11.95 feet NGVD, which is about 2.02 feet below the historical average for this time of year. Compared to last year on this date, the lake is a whopping 2.84 feet lower, and 2.31 feet lower than two years ago. This lower water level is definitely something to keep in mind as you plan your fishing trip.
Weather Forecast and Impact on Fishing
The weather forecast for today calls for clear skies with 0% chance of precipitation and a high of 76°F (24°C). Winds will be out of the northwest at around 8 mph (13 kph). These clear skies and comfortable temperatures should make for a pleasant day out on the water. However, the northwest wind might make for some choppy conditions in open areas of the lake, so be prepared for that. The bright sun will also make it easier for fish to see you, so using lighter line and natural-colored baits can be beneficial.
Fishing Forecast
With the lower water levels, finding fish might require a bit more effort. Focus your fishing around areas with remaining vegetation, submerged structure, or drop-offs. Here’s a breakdown by species:
Largemouth Bass
Bass will likely be holding tighter to cover in the shallower water. Flipping and pitching creature baits or Texas-rigged worms around heavy cover like reeds or lily pads should be productive. Spinnerbaits and crankbaits can also be effective for covering water and finding active fish along the edges of vegetation. Pay attention to the wind, as it can push baitfish and bass to certain areas of the lake.
Crappie
Look for crappie around deeper holes, submerged brush piles, or near any remaining vegetation. Small jigs, minnows, or crappie tubes fished under a bobber can be effective. Using live bait can be especially productive in clearer water conditions.
Bluegill
Bluegill will be congregating around any available cover in shallower water. Crickets, redworms, or small beetle spins fished near vegetation or docks should produce bites. Downsizing your tackle can increase your chances of hooking these panfish.
Final Thoughts
While the lower water levels present a challenge, there are still plenty of fish to be caught on Lake Okeechobee. Remember to adjust your tactics based on the conditions, and focus your efforts on areas where fish are likely to be holding. Have a safe and successful fishing trip!
