Lake Okeechobee Fishing Report for January 23, 2025

Well folks, it looks like we’re in for another spell of wet weather here on the Big O. The lake level is sitting at 14.55 feet above sea level, which is a tad lower than this time last year (16.20 feet) and the year before that (16.09 feet). We’ve had a good bit of rain lately, with over an inch falling yesterday alone. The forecast for this evening calls for more rain, about an inch and a half. All this rain means the water’s gonna be churned up and muddy, which can make for some tough fishing. But don’t you worry, a little bit of bad weather never stopped a true angler!

How the Weather Impacts Fishing on Lake Okeechobee

Now, you might be wondering how all this rain and muddy water will affect the fishing. Well, let me tell you, it all depends on what you’re after.

Bass Fishing

Bass, they’re a fickle bunch. Muddy water can make it harder for them to see your bait, so you’ll need to adjust your strategy. Try using lures that make a lot of noise and vibration, like crankbaits or spinnerbaits. And don’t be afraid to fish slow and close to cover, that’s where those big ol’ bucketmouths like to hide out when the water’s murky.

Crappie Fishing

Crappie, on the other hand, they don’t seem to mind the dirty water as much. In fact, they often move into shallower water after a rain, looking for an easy meal. So, if you’re after some tasty specks, try fishing around docks, brush piles, and other structure in the shallows. Minnows and small jigs are always a good bet for crappie.

Stay Safe Out There

One last thing, folks. With all this rain, the lake can be a dangerous place. The wind is gonna be whipping, and the waves can get pretty high. So, please be careful out there. Wear your life jacket, and don’t take any unnecessary risks.

That’s all for today’s report. Stay tuned for more updates on the fishing conditions here on Lake Okeechobee. And remember, keep those lines tight and those hooks wet!
