Lake Okeechobee Fishing Report – 10.07.2024

Lake Okeechobee Water Level and Fishing Report (October 2024)

Lake Okeechobee Water Level: How’s it Impacting Fishing This October?

Hold onto your hats, anglers, because Lake Okeechobee is keeping us on our toes this October! The Big O is known for its unpredictable nature, and this year is no exception. With the water level higher than both last year and the historical average, we’re in for some interesting fishing conditions.

Lake O is Looking More Like an Ocean!

As of October 6th, 2024, Lake Okeechobee’s water level sits at a healthy 15.50 feet NGVD. Now, that might just sound like a number, but here’s the kicker:

  • That’s a whole 0.53 feet higher than the historical average for this date.
  • It’s also a significant jump from last year’s level of 16.02 feet on the same date.

So, what does all this mean for our finned friends and the folks who chase them?

The Weather Factor: Sunshine, Rain, and a Touch of Wind

We’ve had a mixed bag of weather lately, with some areas around the lake getting a good soaking (looking at you, S77 with your 2.65 inches of rain!). This recent rainfall, combined with the higher water level, means the lake is primed for some exciting fishing action.

What’s Biting on Lake Okeechobee Right Now?

Here’s the lowdown on how the current conditions are affecting the fishing:

Bass:

The higher water levels mean bass are spreading out, exploring all that flooded vegetation. Look for them in the shallows, especially near those tasty little baitfish. Topwater lures and swim jigs should be your new best friends.

Crappie:

Crappie are loving the flooded brush piles and submerged trees. Break out your trusty jigs and minnows, and get ready for some slab action!

Bluegill:

These feisty panfish are also enjoying the expanded habitat. Look for them near the edges of vegetation and around docks. Crickets and small worms will be irresistible to them.

Don’t Forget Your Life Jacket!

With the water levels higher than usual, safety should be your top priority. Always wear a life jacket, especially if you’re fishing from a boat. And hey, don’t forget to share your awesome catch pictures with us on social media!
