   * On 11 May 1999, Lake Okeechobee Elevation was switched from
     Instantaneous 2400 value to an average-daily lake average.
     On 14 Mar 2001, due to the isolation of various gages within the standard
     10 stations, the average of the interior 4 station gages was used
     as the Lake Okeechobee Elevation.
     On 05 November 2010,  Lake Okeechobee Elevation was switched to a 9 gage
     mix of interior and edge gages to obtain a more reliable representation
     of the lake level.
     On 09 May 2011,  Lake Okeechobee Elevation was switched to a 8 gage
     mix of interior and edge gages to obtain a more reliable representation
     of the lake level due to isolation of S135 from low lake levels.

As of this morning, June 20, 2025, Lake Okeechobee’s elevation is at 11.06 feet. That’s about 2.3 feet lower than it was this time last year, and over 3 feet below where it was two years ago. We’re also sitting about 2.16 feet below the period of record average. The lake is still low, folks.

Weather Forecast for Today

Looks like we’re in for some broken clouds today. The wind will be coming from the east-southeast at around 14.5 mph, with gusts up to 19 mph. Temperatures will be warm, with a high around 89°F during the day and a low around 80°F tonight.

Captain Joe’s Fishing Outlook

Alright, let’s talk fishing. Given the lake levels and the weather, here’s what I’m thinking:

Bass Fishing on Lake Okeechobee

With the lake being low, the bass are going to be concentrated in the deeper areas and around any remaining vegetation. Focus on areas with hydrilla, Kissimmee grass, and reeds. Topwater lures early in the morning could be productive, especially with the cloud cover. As the day heats up, switch to flipping jigs and worms around the edges of the vegetation. The wind could make boat control a little tricky, so be prepared to adjust your approach.

Crappie Fishing on Lake Okeechobee

The crappie will likely be holding around submerged structure and deeper channels. Minnows and jigs are your best bet. Look for them near bridge pilings, docks, and any submerged trees. The wind might make it a bit tougher to present your bait precisely, so consider using a heavier jig head to maintain control.

Other Species

Don’t forget about the bluegill and shellcracker! They’ll be bedding in the shallows, especially around the full moon. Crickets and worms under a bobber are always a good choice. Catfish will be hanging out in the deeper holes and channels. Use cut bait or stink bait for the best results.

General Tips for Fishing Lake Okeechobee Today

  • Stay Hydrated: It’s going to be a hot one, so drink plenty of water.
  • Sun Protection: Wear a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen.
  • Check Your Gear: Make sure your lines are fresh and your hooks are sharp.
  • Be Mindful of the Wind: The wind can pick up quickly, so be aware of your surroundings and adjust your fishing accordingly.
