Lake Okeechobee Fishing Report: Water Levels, Weather, and What’s Biting!

Howdy folks, Captain Joe here, comin’ at ya live (well, almost live – it’s a blog, after all!) from the shores of beautiful Lake Okeechobee. Let’s dive right into what’s happenin’ on the Big O, so you can plan your next fishin’ adventure. And trust me, you’ll need a plan, ’cause this lake is always keepin’ us on our toes!

Lake Okeechobee Water Levels: Down, But Not Out!

As of June 15, 2025, Lake Okeechobee’s water level is sittin’ at 11.18 feet. Now, that’s a far cry from the 13.36 feet we saw this time last year, and even further from the 14.09 feet two years ago. That’s a difference of 2.18 feet lower than last year and 2.91 feet lower than 2023. Sheesh! The average for this time of year (based on the 1965-2007 record) is 13.18 feet, so we’re currently about 2.00 feet below average. Don’t you worry your pretty little head though, we’ll still catch some fish!

What does this mean for fishin’? Well, lower water levels can concentrate the fish in certain areas, makin’ ’em easier to target. But it can also make navigation a bit trickier, so pay attention to those channel depths! According to the latest surveys, Route 1 has a navigation depth of about 5.12 feet, while Route 2 is only around 3.32 feet. Don’t go gettin’ your boat stuck out there, now!

Okeechobee Inflows and Outflows: A Balancing Act

Currently, inflows to the lake are around 339 cubic feet per second (cfs), with the S65E structure contributing the most at 324 cfs. Outflows are at -152 cfs, primarily through the S308 structure (-141 cfs) and the L8 Canal Pt (-11 cfs). The lake is breathin’ in a little more than she’s breathin’ out, but that ain’t sayin’ much!

How This Impacts Lake Okeechobee Fishing:

Now, here’s the million-dollar question: how does all this affect the fishin’? Well, let’s break it down:

  • Bass: With the lower water levels, target those areas with submerged vegetation and structure. The bass will be lookin’ for cover and ambush points. Early mornin’ and late evenin’ will be your best bet, especially with those warmer temperatures comin’ in. Topwater lures, swimbaits, and flippin’ jigs are always a good choice.
  • Crappie (Speck): The speck are still hangin’ around, but they’ll be deep. Look for ’em near submerged structure and bridge pilings. Minnows and jigs are the ticket here.
  • Bluegill/Shellcracker: These panfish are always a good bet, especially for a fun day with the family. Worms and crickets under a bobber near the Kissimmee grass is a recipe for success.

Captain Joe’s Hot Tips for Lake Okeechobee Fishing:

  • Stay Hydrated: It’s gonna be hot out there, folks! Drink plenty of water.
  • Sun Protection: Slather on that sunscreen, wear a hat, and rock those shades.
  • Check Your Gear: Make sure your lines are fresh, your hooks are sharp, and your boat is ready to roll.
  • Be Mindful of Regulations: Know the size and bag limits for the fish you’re targetin’.
  • Have Fun!: Most importantly, enjoy your time on the water!

Well, that’s all for this report, folks. Tight lines and happy fishin’! Remember to check back often for the latest updates from your pal, Captain Joe!
