Howdy folks, Captain Joe here, bringing you your daily dose of what’s happening on our beloved Lake Okeechobee. Been fishin’ these waters for longer than I care to admit, and I’ve seen it all. Let’s dive right into what the Big O’ is serving up today.

Lake Level and Water Conditions

As of today, June 4th, 2025, Lake Okeechobee’s water level is at 11.14 feet. That’s down a bit from yesterday (11.07 feet), and significantly lower than this time last year (12.78 feet) and two years ago (13.98 feet). We’re almost 2 feet below the period of record average. The lake is still fishable, but be mindful of shallow areas and submerged vegetation. Navigation depth on Route 1 is around 5.08 feet and Route 2 is around 3.28 feet.

   * On 11 May 1999, Lake Okeechobee Elevation was switched from
     Instantaneous 2400 value to an average-daily lake average.
     On 14 Mar 2001, due to the isolation of various gages within the standard
     10 stations, the average of the interior 4 station gages was used
     as the Lake Okeechobee Elevation.
     On 05 November 2010,  Lake Okeechobee Elevation was switched to a 9 gage
     mix of interior and edge gages to obtain a more reliable representation
     of the lake level.
     On 09 May 2011,  Lake Okeechobee Elevation was switched to a 8 gage
     mix of interior and edge gages to obtain a more reliable representation
     of the lake level due to isolation of S135 from low lake levels.

Weather Forecast and Fishing Impact

The forecast for today calls for light rain. The wind is coming from the southeast at about 10.6 mph, with gusts up to 16.3 mph. The high for today is expected to be around 85 degrees Fahrenheit, with a low around 75 degrees.

Bass Fishing

With the light rain and moderate winds, bass fishing could be decent today. Focus on areas with submerged vegetation and structure, as the bass will be seeking shelter from the sun and rain. Topwater lures early in the morning could be productive, as well as flipping jigs and worms later in the day. The lower lake levels concentrate the fish, but also make them more wary, so stealth is key. Look for bass near the Kissimmee River and in the Harney Pond area.

Crappie Fishing

Crappie fishing might be a bit tougher with the wind, but it’s still worth a shot. Try drifting jigs or minnows in deeper water near structure. The key is to find areas where the wind isn’t too strong. Look for crappie around the bridges and in the canals.

Other Species

Bluegill and shellcracker fishing should be good in the canals and near the shoreline. Use crickets or worms for bait. Catfish can be caught in the deeper areas of the lake using cut bait or stink bait.

Remember to always check your equipment before heading out on the water, and be sure to bring plenty of water and sunscreen. Stay safe out there, and tight lines!
