Howdy folks, Captain Joe here with your daily Lake Okeechobee fishing report. Been fishin’ these waters for longer than I care to admit, and I’m here to give you the straight scoop.

Lake Okeechobee Water Levels and Conditions

The latest U.S. Army Corps of Engineers data shows the lake level at 10.95 feet NGVD. That’s down a hair from yesterday’s 10.96 feet. We’re still significantly below the historical average for this time of year, sitting about 2.18 feet below the period of record average. Compared to last year, we’re down over two feet (last year 12.97 feet) and almost three feet from two years ago (13.85 feet).

The inflows are at 370 cfs and outflows are at 456 cfs. The lake is still losing water.

Weather Impact on Fishing

Looks like we’ve got some weather headed our way. The forecast for today, June 1st, calls for rain with about 3.76mm expected. The wind will be blowing from the southeast at around 4.74 m/s (about 10.6 mph) with gusts up to 9.66 m/s (around 21.6 mph). Temperatures will range from a low of 70°F to a high of 86°F.

With the rain and wind picking up, here’s how it might affect your fishing:

Bass Fishing

The rain could stir up the water a bit, potentially pushing bass into slightly clearer areas. Focus on areas with good cover like grass lines and lily pads. Topwater baits early in the morning could be productive, especially if the wind isn’t too strong. As the day goes on, switch to flipping jigs and worms around heavy cover. The lower lake levels concentrate the fish, but also make them a bit more wary.

Crappie Fishing

Crappie might be a bit more scattered with the weather change. Try fishing around submerged structure and deeper water near the Kissimmee River. Minnows and jigs are always a good bet.      On 05 November 2010,  Lake Okeechobee Elevation was switched to a 9 gage
     mix of interior and edge gages to obtain a more reliable representation
     of the lake level.
     On 09 May 2011,  Lake Okeechobee Elevation was switched to a 8 gage
     mix of interior and edge gages to obtain a more reliable representation
     of the lake level due to isolation of S135 from low lake levels.
