Lake Okeechobee Fishing Report for May 7, 2025

Lake Okeechobee Fishing Report – May 7, 2025

Howdy folks, Captain Joe here with your Lake Okeechobee fishing report for today, May 7, 2025. The lake’s at 11.12 feet above sea level, a good bit lower than last year’s 14.02 and the 14.16 we saw two years back on this date. That’s also considerably below the historical average for this time of year (13.48 feet). This lower water level is definitely something to keep in mind as you plan your fishing trip.

Weather Impact

The forecast for this afternoon calls for light rain and a high of 87°F (30.54°C). The wind will be blowing from the east-southeast at around 12 mph (5.48 m/s) with gusts up to 19 mph (8.62 m/s). This light rain and moderate wind could make for some choppy conditions out on the open water, but it could also stir up the fish and make for some good action.

Fishing Forecast

With the lake level lower than usual and the weather conditions we’re expecting, here’s how I see the fishing shaping up:

Largemouth Bass

The lower water level concentrates the bass in remaining deeper areas and along the edges of vegetation. Focus your efforts around Kissimmee grass, hydrilla, and other aquatic plants. Spinnerbaits, swim jigs, and topwater frogs should be productive, especially early in the morning. As the day progresses and the sun gets higher, switch to flipping and pitching creature baits or Texas-rigged worms in the thicker cover.

Crappie

Look for crappie around submerged structure like brush piles, fallen trees, and dock pilings. Minnows and small jigs are your best bet. The wind might make it a bit trickier to stay on top of the fish, so be prepared to adjust your drift and use heavier weights if necessary.

Bluegill

Bluegill fishing should be good in the shallows, especially around beds. Crickets, redworms, and small beetle spins are all effective baits. Look for areas with sandy or gravelly bottoms near vegetation.
