Lake Okeechobee Fishing Report for April 24, 2025

Howdy folks, Captain Joe here with your Okeechobee fishing report for April 24, 2025. The lake level is currently at 11.62 feet NGVD, which is a good bit lower than last year’s 14.54 feet and the 2023 level of 14.27 feet on this date. It’s also considerably below the historical average for this time of year (13.78 feet). This lower water level is definitely something to keep in mind as you plan your fishing trip.

Weather Forecast and Fishing Impact

The weather forecast for today calls for scattered clouds with a high of 80°F (26.7°C) and a low of 70°F (21.1°C). The wind will be out of the east at around 15 mph (6.7 m/s), with gusts up to 24 mph (10.7 m/s). This moderate easterly wind will likely create some chop on the main lake, making it a bit tougher for open-water fishing. However, it could also concentrate baitfish along the shorelines and near vegetation, creating good opportunities for bass and other species.

Fishing Tips for Today’s Conditions

With the lower water levels, finding fish might require a bit more searching. Focus on areas where the remaining vegetation provides cover, such as Kissimmee grass, reeds, and hydrilla. The wind-blown shorelines could also be productive, as baitfish will likely be pushed up against the edges.

Bass Fishing:

Flipping and pitching creature baits or senkos into thicker vegetation could be a good strategy for targeting bass. Spinnerbaits and chatterbaits can also be effective for covering water along the wind-blown shorelines. With the clearer water conditions that often accompany lower lake levels, consider using natural-colored baits.

Crappie Fishing:

Look for crappie around submerged structure, such as brush piles, docks, and other underwater cover. Minnows and small jigs are usually effective for crappie. With the wind creating some chop, using a slip bobber rig can help keep your bait at the desired depth.

Bluegill and Shellcracker Fishing:

Bluegill and shellcracker can often be found near the edges of vegetation, especially in shallower areas. Worms, crickets, and small beetle spins are good choices for these panfish.

Overall Outlook

While the lower water level presents some challenges, there are still plenty of fishing opportunities on Lake Okeechobee. By adapting your techniques and focusing on areas with cover, you can still have a successful day on the water. Remember to be patient, persistent, and enjoy the beautiful Florida outdoors. Tight lines, everyone!
