Lake Okeechobee Fishing Report for April 20, 2025
Howdy folks, Captain Joe here with your Lake Okeechobee fishing report for April 20, 2025. The lake level is currently at 11.79 feet NGVD, which is a good bit lower than last year’s 14.70 and two years ago at 14.33 feet. It’s also significantly below the historical average for this time of year (13.89 feet). This low water level is definitely something to keep in mind as you plan your fishing trip.
Weather Conditions and Impact on Fishing
The weather forecast for today calls for clear skies with a high of 86°F (30°C) and a low of 64°F (18°C). Winds are expected to be light out of the east at around 7 mph (3 m/s). These clear skies and comfortable temperatures should make for a pleasant day out on the water, but the bright sun might make the fish a bit spooky. Early morning and late afternoon will be the prime times to fish.
Fishing Forecast for Different Species
With the lower water levels, finding fish will require a bit more effort. Focus your efforts on areas with deeper water, such as the Kissimmee River, the Rim Canal, and around the outside grass lines. Here’s a breakdown by species:
Largemouth Bass
Bass fishing should be decent, especially early and late in the day. Topwater lures like frogs and buzzbaits can be effective in the shallows, while senkos, swimbaits, and flipping and pitching creature baits will work well in deeper water around vegetation. Look for bass to be holding tight to cover in the clearer water.
Crappie
Crappie fishing can be excellent this time of year. Look for them around submerged structure like brush piles and docks. Minnows and small jigs are your best bet. With the lower water, you might need to fish a bit deeper than usual.
Bluegill and Shellcracker
Bluegill and shellcracker are starting to bed, so look for them in shallow, sandy areas. Worms, crickets, and small beetle spins are all good choices. Sight fishing can be very effective when the water is clear.
Catfish
Catfish are always a good option on Lake Okeechobee. They can be found in deeper holes and channels. Use live bait like worms, nightcrawlers, or cut bait for the best results.
Tips for Fishing in Low Water Conditions
- Focus on deeper water areas.
- Use finesse techniques and lighter line.
- Fish early and late in the day.
- Be patient and persistent.
That’s it for today’s Lake Okeechobee fishing report. Remember to check back on Mondays for a more detailed weekly fishing report. Good luck out there and tight lines!
