Lake Okeechobee Fishing Report – April 9, 2025
Howdy folks, Captain Joe here with your Lake Okeechobee fishing report for today, April 9, 2025. The lake level is currently at 12.34 feet NGVD, which is quite a bit lower than this time last year (15.02 feet) and two years ago (14.28 feet). It’s also well below the historical average for this time of year (14.14 feet). This lower water level is definitely something to keep in mind as you plan your fishing trip.
Weather Forecast and Fishing Impact
The weather forecast for this afternoon calls for scattered clouds with 39% cloud cover and a high of 71°F (22°C). Winds will be out of the west-northwest at 8 mph (13 kph). These mild temperatures and moderate winds should make for pleasant fishing conditions.
Bass Fishing
With the lower water levels, bass will be concentrated in deeper areas and around remaining vegetation. Focus your efforts on drop-offs, creek channels, and any areas holding hydrilla or other aquatic plants. Flipping and pitching creature baits or Texas-rigged worms in these areas should produce some bites. Spinnerbaits and crankbaits can also be effective for covering water and locating active fish.
Crappie Fishing
Crappie fishing can be excellent in the spring, and the lower water levels may concentrate them around deeper brush piles and submerged structure. Using live minnows or small jigs tipped with minnows is a proven tactic for catching crappie. Look for areas near the mouths of canals or along the edges of the lake where deeper water is accessible.
Bluegill Fishing
Bluegill are another species that can provide plenty of action in the spring. They’ll be bedding in shallow areas with sandy or gravelly bottoms. Look for these beds in protected coves and along the shoreline. Small crickets, redworms, or poppers are all effective baits for bluegill.
That’s the Lake Okeechobee fishing report for today. Remember to check back on Mondays for my full weekly fishing report with more detailed information and tips. Tight lines and good fishing!
