Lake Okeechobee Fishing Report for April 8, 2025

Howdy folks, Captain Joe here with your Lake Okeechobee fishing report for April 8, 2025. The lake level is currently at 12.38 feet NGVD, a good bit lower than last year’s 15.05 feet and the 14.30 feet from two years ago. This lower water level is definitely something to keep in mind as we head into today’s fishing.

Weather Impact on Fishing

The forecast for today calls for light rain and a high of 83°F. Winds are expected to be out of the south-southwest at around 10 mph. This light rain and moderate wind could make for some choppy conditions out on the open water, but it should also help to cool things down a bit and get the fish biting.

Fishing Forecast by Species

With the lower water levels, finding fish will require focusing on areas where they’ve concentrated. Here’s a breakdown by species:

Largemouth Bass

The lower water levels will concentrate bass around remaining vegetation and deeper holes. Flipping and pitching creature baits or Texas-rigged worms around these areas should be productive. The wind will also create some good opportunities for topwater action, especially early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Look for areas where the wind is blowing into the shoreline or around submerged vegetation.

Crappie

Crappie fishing should be good around deeper brush piles and submerged structure. Using live minnows or small jigs tipped with minnows will be the best bet. The wind might make it a bit challenging to stay on top of these fish, so be prepared to adjust your tactics accordingly.

Bluegill and Shellcracker

Bluegill and shellcracker will be holding in similar areas as the crappie. Look for them around deeper brush piles and submerged vegetation. Small crickets or redworms fished under a bobber should produce some good catches.

Catfish

Catfish are less affected by water level fluctuations and can be found throughout the lake. Fishing on the bottom with cut bait, nightcrawlers, or stink bait should be effective. The wind might make it a bit challenging to keep your bait in place, so using heavier weights might be necessary.

Overall Outlook

While the lower water levels present some challenges, there are still plenty of opportunities to catch fish on Lake Okeechobee. Focusing on areas where fish are concentrated and adjusting your tactics to the weather conditions will be key to success. So get out there, enjoy the beautiful Florida weather, and tight lines!
