Howdy folks, Captain Joe here, bringing you your daily dose of what’s happening on Lake Okeechobee. Been fishin’ these waters for longer than I care to admit, and I’m here to give you the straight scoop.

Lake Level and Water Conditions

As of today, September 5th, 2025, Lake Okeechobee’s elevation is at 12.62 feet NGVD. That’s down a bit from yesterday (12.60 feet), and significantly lower than last year (14.43 feet) and two years ago (15.37 feet). We’re also sitting below the period of record average of 14.33 feet by about 1.71 feet.

Navigation depths are Route 1: 6.56′ and Route 2: 4.76′

Weather Update

Looks like we’ve got some weather movin’ in. The forecast calls for rain, about 10.55mm (0.41 inches). Wind is comin’ from the south-southeast at 4.5 m/s (10 mph), with gusts up to 6.98 m/s (15.6 mph). Humidity is sitting at 94%.

Temperature-wise, expect a daytime high around 30.4°C (87°F) and a nighttime low of 25.48°C (78°F).

Fishing Forecast

Now, how’s all this gonna affect your fishin’ trip? Here’s what I reckon:

Bass Fishing

With the lake level lower than usual, the bass are likely to be concentrated in areas with remaining vegetation and near structure. The incoming rain could stir things up a bit, potentially triggering some feeding activity. Focus on areas with hydrilla, Kissimmee grass, and any submerged timber. Topwater baits early in the morning and late in the afternoon could be productive. As the day warms up, switch to flipping jigs and worms around heavy cover.

Key Areas: Look for bass around the edges of the Kissimmee River channel, and near any remaining submerged vegetation in the South Bay area.

Crappie (Speck) Fishing

The speck are likely holding in deeper water near structure. With the lake level down, those deeper spots are even more crucial. Try jigging minnows or small jigs around bridge pilings, submerged trees, and any other vertical structure you can find. The rain might make them a little more finicky, so experiment with different colors and presentations.

Tip: Use your electronics to locate schools of crappie before dropping your line.

Other Species

Bluegill and shellcracker should still be active around the grass lines. Use crickets or worms under a float. Catfish will be biting on cut bait or stink bait in the deeper channels.

General Tips for Today

  • Stay Hydrated: It’s still hot out there, so drink plenty of water.
  • Sun Protection: Don’t forget your hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen.
  • Check Your Gear: Make sure your lines are fresh and your hooks are sharp.
  • Be Safe: Keep an eye on the weather and be aware of your surroundings.

That’s all for today’s report, folks. Tight lines and happy fishin’!
