Howdy folks, Captain Joe here with your daily Lake Okeechobee fishing report. Let’s dive right into what’s happening on the Big O today.

Lake Okeechobee Water Levels and Conditions

As of this morning, August 29, 2025, Lake Okeechobee’s elevation is at 12.38 feet NGVD. That’s down a bit from yesterday (12.34 feet) and significantly lower than last year (14.18 feet) and two years ago (15.32 feet). We’re also sitting about 1.79 feet below the period of record average. Keep an eye on those U.S. Army Corps of Engineers data for the latest updates.

   * On 11 May 1999, Lake Okeechobee Elevation was switched from
     Instantaneous 2400 value to an average-daily lake average.
     On 14 Mar 2001, due to the isolation of various gages within the standard
     10 stations, the average of the interior 4 station gages was used
     as the Lake Okeechobee Elevation.
     On 05 November 2010,  Lake Okeechobee Elevation was switched to a 9 gage
     mix of interior and edge gages to obtain a more reliable representation
     of the lake level.
     On 09 May 2011,  Lake Okeechobee Elevation was switched to a 8 gage
     mix of interior and edge gages to obtain a more reliable representation
     of the lake level due to isolation of S135 from low lake levels.
     Today Lake Okechobee elevation is determined from the 4 Int & 4 Edge stations

Weather Forecast and Fishing Impact

The weather forecast for today, August 29th, calls for rain. We’re looking at about 6.87 inches of rain, with winds coming from the northeast at around 10.4 mph, gusting up to 17.6 mph. Temperatures will be in the high 80s during the day and cooling down to the mid-70s at night.

Bass Fishing

With the rain and wind, bass fishing might be a bit challenging today. Look for areas with submerged vegetation that provide cover. The lower lake levels concentrate the fish, but also make them more wary. Topwater lures early in the morning or late in the afternoon could be productive if the wind isn’t too strong. Otherwise, try flipping jigs or using Texas-rigged worms around the edges of the grass.

Crappie Fishing

Crappie fishing could be decent in the canals and deeper areas of the lake. The rain might stir up the water a bit, so using minnows or jigs under a slip bobber could be a good strategy. Focus on areas near structure or submerged trees.

Catfish Fishing

Catfish will likely be active with the rain. Use live bait or stink bait near the bottom in the canals or around deeper holes in the lake. The increased runoff from the rain can wash more food into the lake, attracting catfish.
