Howdy folks! Captain Joe here, bringing you your daily dose of what’s happening on our beloved Lake Okeechobee. Been fishin’ and huntin’ these parts for longer than I care to admit, and I’m here to share what I’m seeing out on the water.

Lake Okeechobee Water Levels and Flows

Let’s get right to it. As of today, August 27, 2025, Lake Okeechobee’s elevation is at 12.34 feet NGVD. That’s down from 14.15 feet last year and 15.32 feet two years ago. We’re also sitting 1.82 feet below the period of record average. The lake level has dropped .02 feet since yesterday.

Total inflows are at 4923 cfs, with the S65E contributing a good chunk at 2733 cfs. Outflows are considerably lower at 108 cfs.

   * On 11 May 1999, Lake Okeechobee Elevation was switched from
     Instantaneous 2400 value to an average-daily lake average.
     On 14 Mar 2001, due to the isolation of various gages within the standard
     10 stations, the average of the interior 4 station gages was used
     as the Lake Okeechobee Elevation.
     On 05 November 2010,  Lake Okeechobee Elevation was switched to a 9 gage
     mix of interior and edge gages to obtain a more reliable representation
     of the lake level.
     On 09 May 2011,  Lake Okeechobee Elevation was switched to a 8 gage
     mix of interior and edge gages to obtain a more reliable representation
     of the lake level due to isolation of S135 from low lake levels.
     Today Lake Okechobee elevation is determined from the 4 Int & 4 Edge stations

Weather Impact on Fishing Today

Looks like we’ve got some weather to contend with today. The forecast calls for rain, about 3.08mm, with winds coming from the south-southwest (209 degrees) at around 13 mph, gusting up to 20 mph. The high for today is expected to be around 93 degrees Fahrenheit, with a low of 75 degrees.

How This Affects Your Fishing

Bass Fishing

With the lake level being lower than previous years, the bass are going to be concentrated in areas with good cover and deeper water. The incoming rain might stir things up a bit, potentially improving the bite. Focus on areas near Kissimmee River and the cuts along the North Shore. With the wind, lipped crankbaits and spinnerbaits will be your friend.

Crappie Fishing

Crappie will be holding tight to structure as well. Look for them near submerged trees and brush piles. The rain could make them a bit more active, so try minnows or jigs under a slip bobber. The wind may make boat control difficult, so be prepared to anchor or use a trolling motor to stay on your spot.

Other Species

Catfish will be biting with the rain coming in. Use stink baits or cut bait near the bottom. Bluegill and shellcracker will be around the lily pads and grass lines. Crickets and worms will do the trick for them.

  • Stay Hydrated: It’s still hot out there, so drink plenty of water.
  • Check Your Gear: Make sure your lines are fresh and your hooks are sharp.
  • Be Mindful of the Wind: The wind can pick up quickly, so be prepared and stay safe.
