+ Flow Due to lockages is computed utilizing average daily headwater and
tailwater along with total number of lockages for the day to calculate
a volume which is then converted to an average discharge in cfs.
++ Preferred flow is determined from either the spillway discharge or the below flow meter daily

   * On 11 May 1999, Lake Okeechobee Elevation was switched from
Instantaneous 2400 value to an average-daily lake average.
On 14 Mar 2001, due to the isolation of various gages within the standard
10 stations, the average of the interior 4 station gages was used
     as the Lake Okeechobee Elevation.
On 05 November 2010, Lake Okeechobee Elevation was switched to a 9 gage
mix of interior and edge gages to obtain a more reliable representation
     of the lake level.
On 09 May 2011, Lake Okeechobee Elevation was switched to a 8 gage
mix of interior and edge gages to obtain a more reliable representation
of the lake level due to isolation of S135 from low lake levels.
Today Lake Okechobee elevation is determined from the 4 Int & 4 Edge stations

Report Generated 21AUG2025 @ 09:15 ** Preliminary Data - Subject to Revision **

As you can see, the lake level is sitting at 12.19 feet. That’s down a bit from last year (14.10 feet) and significantly lower than two years ago (15.36 feet). We’re also below the period of record average. Keep an eye on those navigation depths if you’re running a bigger boat.

Weather Impact on Fishing

The forecast for today, August 21st, calls for light rain and winds from the Southeast. Here’s the breakdown:

  • Rain: Expect about 0.66 inches of rain.
  • Wind: Winds will be blowing from the Southeast (around 171 degrees) at about 10.87 mph, with gusts up to 21.45 mph.
  • Temperature: High of 93.25°F, low of 79.7°F.

This kind of weather can affect the fish in a few ways. The rain can cool the water slightly, which can get the fish moving, especially in the shallows. The wind can make it a bit tougher to fish from a boat, but it can also concentrate baitfish in certain areas, which the predators will follow.

Fishing Forecast for Lake Okeechobee

Bass Fishing

With the lake level being lower than average, look for bass around the Kissimmee grass and submerged vegetation. The light rain and wind could stir up the water, making moving baits like spinnerbaits and crankbaits effective. Focus on areas where the wind is blowing into, as this will concentrate baitfish. Topwater action early in the morning could be good too, before the sun gets too high. Remember to target those transition areas where the grass meets open water. The best bass lures for these conditions are typically dark colored soft plastics.

Crappie Fishing

Crappie will likely be holding around deeper structure, like brush piles and submerged trees. With the wind, drifting with jigs or minnows could be a good tactic. The stained water from the rain might push them a bit deeper, so adjust your presentation accordingly. Look for crappie near the major canals and channels.

Catfish Fishing

Catfish are always a good bet on Okeechobee. The rain can wash more nutrients into the lake, which can get them feeding. Fish on the bottom with live or cut bait, especially in areas with current. The wind shouldn’t affect catfish fishing too much, so you can focus on finding the right bait and location. Try fishing near the major points and creek mouths.

Captain Joe’s Tip of the Day

Don’t be afraid to experiment with your bait presentation. Sometimes a slight change in retrieve or lure color can make all the difference. And always, always, pay attention to the wind and water clarity. Those two factors can dictate where the fish are holding and what they’re biting on.

Tight lines and safe fishin’, y’all!

– Captain Joe
