Lake Okeechobee Fishing Report – August 6, 2025 – Captain Joe

Howdy folks, Captain Joe here, bringing you your daily dose of what’s happening on Lake Okeechobee. Been fishin’ these waters for longer than I care to admit, and I’ve seen it all. Let’s get right to it.

Lake Okeechobee Water Levels and Conditions

The lake level is sitting at 12.03 feet today. That’s down from 13.82 feet last year and 15.30 feet two years ago. We’re also sitting almost 2 feet below the Period of Record Average. The water temperature is still warm, typical for this time of year. Navigation depths are Route 1 at 5.97′ and Route 2 at 4.17′.

Key Data from the Corps:

  • Lake Okeechobee Elevation: 12.03 ft
  • Total Inflows: 2985 cfs
  • Total Outflows: 1734 cfs

Weather Impact on Fishing

The weather forecast for today, August 7th, predicts rain of about an inch. The wind will be coming from the East (82 degrees) at around 11 mph, with gusts up to 17 mph. The high for today is around 90 degrees Fahrenheit, with a low around 79 degrees.

How this impacts the fishing:

  • Bass Fishing: The rain could stir things up a bit, potentially pushing bass closer to cover. With the wind picking up, focus on areas with less wind exposure. Topwater baits early in the morning could be productive before the heavy rain sets in. Look for bass around Kissimmee grass and lily pads.
  • Crappie Fishing: Crappie will likely be holding deeper to avoid the surface chop. Try fishing jigs or minnows around submerged structure and bridge pilings. The stained water from the rain might improve the bite.
  • Bluegill Fishing: Bluegill will be seeking shelter from the rain as well. Look for them around docks, reeds, and any available shade. Crickets and worms are always a good bet.

Captain Joe’s Fishing Tips for Today

Given the conditions, I’d recommend focusing on areas that offer protection from the wind and rain. Early morning and late afternoon will likely be your best bet for avoiding the worst of the weather. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different baits and techniques to see what the fish are responding to. Remember to check your lines and knots frequently, especially after landing a fish.

Tight lines and safe fishing, y’all!
