Lake Okeechobee Fishing

Lake Level and Weather Conditions

Howdy folks, Captain Joe here with your daily Okeechobee fishing update. Let’s get right to it.

The lake level is currently hovering around -NR- feet. Last year at this time, we were at 13.70 feet, and two years ago, 15.27 feet. We’re below the period of record average of 13.81 feet.

We’re expecting rain today, about 2.79mm. The wind is blowing from the east-southeast at about 10.8 mph, with gusts up to 17.8 mph. Temperatures will be in the low 90s for a high and mid 70s for a low. It’s a typical hot and humid Florida summer day out here on the Big O.

How It’s Impacting the Fishing

With the lake level -NR- feet, it’s impacting the fishing in a few ways. The Kissimmee River is flowing at 435 cfs. Outflows are at 68 cfs.

Bass Fishing

The bass fishing is going to be a bit tougher with the rain coming down. Look for the bass to be holding tight to cover, especially around the grass lines and lily pads. Topwater baits early in the morning before the rain really gets going can be productive. Once the rain starts, switch to flipping jigs and worms into the thick stuff. Focus on areas with moving water, even if it’s just a trickle.

Key Areas: Look to fish the Kissimmee River mouth and the South end of the lake.

Top Baits: Jigs, Worms, Topwater Lures

Crappie Fishing

The crappie fishing will be slow. With the lake level down, they’re likely holding in deeper water near structure. Minnows and jigs fished around submerged trees and brush piles are your best bet. Be patient and persistent.

Key Areas: Deeper Channels, Submerged Structures

Top Baits: Minnows, Jigs

Bluegill Fishing

The bluegill fishing should be fair. Look for them around the edges of the grass flats and near any submerged vegetation. Crickets and worms fished under a bobber are always a good choice. The rain might scatter them a bit, so keep moving until you find a productive spot.

Key Areas: Grassy edges, submerged vegetation

Top Baits: Crickets, Worms

Tips for the Day

  • Stay Hydrated: It’s hot out there, so drink plenty of water.
  • Sun Protection: Don’t forget your sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses.
  • Fish Slow: With the conditions, a slower presentation is key.
  • Safety First: Keep an eye on the weather and be prepared for changing conditions.

That’s all for today’s report. Get out there and enjoy the Big O, and remember to always practice responsible fishing. Tight lines!

Tight Lines,
Captain Joe
