Howdy folks, Captain Joe here, bringing you your daily dose of what’s happening on and around our beloved Lake Okeechobee. Been fishin’ these waters for longer than I care to admit, and I’m here to share what I’m seeing.

Lake Level and Water Conditions

The latest data shows Lake Okeechobee sitting at 12.09 feet. That’s down a bit from yesterday (12.06 feet) and significantly lower than last year (13.55 feet) and two years ago (15.09 feet). We’re about 1.65 feet below the historical average for this time of year. Keep an eye on those levels, folks, as they can change quick.

   * On 11 May 1999, Lake Okeechobee Elevation was switched from
     Instantaneous 2400 value to an average-daily lake average.
     On 14 Mar 2001, due to the isolation of various gages within the standard
     10 stations, the average of the interior 4 station gages was used
     as the Lake Okeechobee Elevation.
     On 05 November 2010,  Lake Okeechobee Elevation was switched to a 9 gage
     mix of interior and edge gages to obtain a more reliable representation
     of the lake level.
     On 09 May 2011,  Lake Okeechobee Elevation was switched to a 8 gage
     mix of interior and edge gages to obtain a more reliable representation
     of the lake level due to isolation of S135 from low lake levels.
     Today Lake Okechobee elevation is determined from the 4 Int & 4 Edge stations

Weather Impact on Fishing Today

Looks like we’ve got some weather coming our way. The forecast for today, July 30th, predicts rain, about 2.74mm. The wind will be blowing from the southeast at about 10.5 mph, with gusts up to 15.6 mph. Temperatures will be warm, with highs around 92°F and lows around 78°F.

Here’s how this weather might affect your fishing:

  • Bass Fishing: The rain could stir things up a bit, washing insects and other goodies into the lake. Bass might be more active near the surface and edges. Try using topwater lures or shallow-diving crankbaits. The wind could make boat control a little tricky, so be mindful of your positioning.
  • Crappie Fishing: Crappie tend to seek shelter during heavy rain and wind. Look for them around submerged structures, docks, or deeper areas. Minnows and jigs are always a good bet.
  • Catfish Fishing: Catfish don’t mind a little rain! In fact, it can improve their bite. Fish near the bottom with live bait, cut bait, or stinkbaits. The inflows from the rain can bring in more food and attract catfish to those areas.

Captain Joe’s Quick Tips for Today

  • Bass: Focus on areas with vegetation and moving water.
  • Crappie: Fish deep around structure.
  • Catfish: Bottom fishing with smelly bait is your best bet.
