+ Flow Due to lockages is computed utilizing average daily headwater and
tailwater along with total number of lockages for the day to calculate
a volume which is then converted to an average discharge in cfs.
++ Preferred flow is determined from either the spillway discharge or the below flow meter daily

   * On 11 May 1999, Lake Okeechobee Elevation was switched from
Instantaneous 2400 value to an average-daily lake average.
On 14 Mar 2001, due to the isolation of various gages within the standard
10 stations, the average of the interior 4 station gages was used
     as the Lake Okeechobee Elevation.
On 05 November 2010, Lake Okeechobee Elevation was switched to a 9 gage
mix of interior and edge gages to obtain a more reliable representation
     of the lake level.
On 09 May 2011, Lake Okeechobee Elevation was switched to a 8 gage
mix of interior and edge gages to obtain a more reliable representation
of the lake level due to isolation of S135 from low lake levels.
Today Lake Okechobee elevation is determined from the 4 Int & 4 Edge stations

Report Generated 29JUL2025 @ 09:07 ** Preliminary Data - Subject to Revision **

As of today, July 28, 2025, Lake Okeechobee’s elevation is at 12.06 feet. That’s down from last year’s 13.52 feet and significantly lower than two years ago at 15.03 feet. We’re also sitting about 1.67 feet below the historical average for this time of year. The lake level has dropped slightly over the past week.

The weather forecast calls for clear skies with a light breeze from the southeast (around 9 mph, gusting to 16.6 mph). Temperatures will be hot, with daytime highs around 94°F and nighttime lows around 81°F.

Fishing Forecast: How It’s Shaping Up

With the lake levels continuing to drop and the summer heat in full swing, here’s how I see the fishing shaping up for the next few days:

Bass Fishing on Lake Okeechobee

The lower water levels are concentrating the bass in the deeper grass lines and around any available structure. Focus your efforts on areas with hydrilla, Kissimmee grass, and lily pads. Topwater lures early in the morning and late in the evening could produce some strikes. As the day heats up, switch to flipping jigs and worms in the thickest cover. Live shiners are always a good bet, especially when the bite gets tough. Remember to fish deeper during the day to find those Okeechobee giants!

  • Top Lures: Topwater frogs, swimbaits, flipping jigs, Texas-rigged worms, live shiners.
  • Key Areas: Harney Pond, South Bay, and the Kissimmee River.

Crappie Fishing on Lake Okeechobee

Crappie fishing will be best early and late in the day. Look for them around submerged brush piles and bridge pilings. Minnows and small jigs are your best bet. With the clear skies, the crappie will likely be holding a bit deeper to avoid the sunlight. Try trolling slowly through these areas to locate schools of crappie.

  • Top Baits: Live minnows, small jigs (white, chartreuse).
  • Hotspots: Okeechobee’s bridges, deeper channels, and submerged structure.

Catfish Fishing on Lake Okeechobee

Catfishing should be good, especially at night. Use live or cut bait near the bottom in the deeper parts of the lake. The inflows from Fisheating Creek are always a good place to start. The hotter weather usually gets the catfish moving at night, so be prepared for some action after dark.

  • Best Baits: Cut shad, nightcrawlers, stink baits.
  • Prime Locations: Deeper holes, channels, and areas near creek mouths.

Final Cast

Overall, the fishing on Lake Okeechobee is still holding steady, but you’ll need to adjust your tactics to account for the lower water levels and hot weather. Get out there early, stay hydrated, and be prepared to work for your catch. Tight lines, y’all!

– Captain Joe

P.S. Don’t forget to check back tomorrow for another update. And remember to always practice catch and release to help keep our lake healthy for generations to come!
