Lake Okeechobee Fishing Report – July 16, 2025 – With Captain Joe

Howdy folks, Captain Joe here, bringing you your daily Lake Okeechobee fishing report. Been fishin’ these waters for longer than I care to admit, and I’m here to tell you what’s bitin’ and what ain’t.

Lake Level and Weather Conditions

The latest U.S. Army Corps of Engineers data shows Lake Okeechobee’s elevation at 11.81 feet NGVD. That’s down from last year’s 13.57 feet and significantly lower than two years ago at 14.89 feet. We’re also sitting 1.80 feet below the period of record average. The lake level has decreased by 0.05 feet since yesterday.

The forecast for today is calling for rain. We’re looking at about 7.2mm of rain with winds coming from the east-southeast at around 9.5 mph, with gusts up to 20.5 mph. The temperature will be around 86 degrees Fahrenheit with a low of 78 degrees Fahrenheit.

Fishing Forecast: How Will This Affect the Bite?

This time of year, with the heat and humidity, can be a bit tough, but don’t let that discourage you. Here’s how the current conditions might impact your fishing:

Bass Fishing

The lower lake levels mean more vegetation is exposed, creating excellent ambush points for largemouth bass. Focus on areas with thick hydrilla, Kissimmee grass, and lily pads. The incoming rain could stir up the water a bit, making moving baits like spinnerbaits and crankbaits effective. Topwater action early in the morning and late in the evening around the edges of the vegetation should be good. With the lake level being lower than average, the bass are more concentrated in the remaining cover. Look for areas where the water is moving slightly, as this will hold more oxygen and attract baitfish.

Key Areas: Look for bass around Observation Shoal, and the outside edges of the grass lines near South Bay.

  • Top Lures: Spinnerbaits, crankbaits, topwater frogs, and Texas-rigged worms.

Crappie (Speck) Fishing

Crappie fishing can be a bit more challenging in the summer heat. Look for them holding around deeper structures like bridge pilings and submerged trees. Minnows and jigs are your best bet. The rain might push them a bit deeper, so adjust your presentation accordingly. Focus on shaded areas where the water is cooler. With the lake level down, the crappie will be more concentrated in these deeper areas.

Key Areas: Try around the Kissimmee River channel and any submerged structure you can find using your electronics.

  • Top Lures: Live minnows, small jigs, and crappie nibbles.

Bluegill Fishing

Bluegill fishing remains consistent. They’ll be bedding in the shallows around the full moon. Use crickets, worms, or small popping bugs. Focus on areas with vegetation and submerged structure. The rain shouldn’t affect them too much, as they tend to stay in the protected areas. The lower lake levels might concentrate them a bit more, making it easier to find productive spots.

Key Areas: Look for bluegill in the canals and around the edges of the lily pads near Buckhead Ridge.

  • Top Lures: Crickets, worms, small popping bugs, and beetle spins.

General Tips for Lake Okeechobee Fishing

  • Stay Hydrated: It’s hot out there, folks. Bring plenty of water and stay hydrated.
  • Sun Protection: Don’t forget your sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses.
  • Check the Weather: Conditions can change quickly on the lake, so keep an eye on the forecast.
  • Fish Early and Late: The bite is usually best during the cooler parts of the day.

That’s all for today’s report. Remember to respect the lake and leave it better than you found it. Tight lines and happy fishing!
