     On 05 November 2010,  Lake Okeechobee Elevation was switched to a 9 gage
     mix of interior and edge gages to obtain a more reliable representation

     On 09 May 2011,  Lake Okeechobee Elevation was switched to a 8 gage
     mix of interior and edge gages to obtain a more reliable representation
     of the lake level due to isolation of S135 from low lake levels.

As you can see, the lake level is sitting at 10.95 feet. That’s a good bit lower than the average for this time of year. We’re about 2.24 feet lower than last year and 2.88 feet lower than two years ago. Keep an eye on those inflows and outflows, too. They tell a story about where the water’s headed.

Weather Forecast and Fishing Impact

Now, let’s talk about the weather. The forecast for today, May 27th, calls for rain, about 2.85mm. We’re looking at winds coming from the southeast at around 12 mph, with gusts up to 15 mph. Temperatures will be in the low 90s (around 31-32°C) during the day, cooling down to the mid-70s (around 24°C) at night.

Bass Fishing

With the rain and wind, bass fishing might be a bit tougher today. Look for areas where the wind is pushing baitfish, and try using lures that create a lot of vibration, like spinnerbaits or crankbaits. The lower lake levels mean more vegetation is exposed, so flipping and pitching around those areas could also be productive. Focus on areas with good cover and structure to find those largemouth bass.

Crappie Fishing

The crappie might be a bit scattered with the weather. Try fishing around submerged structure or near deeper channels. Minnows and jigs are always a good bet. With the rain, they might be holding a bit tighter to cover.

Bluegill Fishing

Bluegill fishing should still be decent. Look for them in the shallows near vegetation. Crickets and worms are your best bet. The rain might stir up some insects, bringing the bluegill closer to the surface.

Captain Joe’s Tip of the Day

Don’t be afraid to experiment with your presentation. Sometimes a slight change in retrieve or lure color can make all the difference. And always, always practice catch and release to help preserve our fishery for future generations.
