Lake Okeechobee Fishing Report – May 20, 2025

Howdy folks, Captain Joe here, bringing you your daily dose of what’s happening on and around our beloved Lake Okeechobee. Been fishin’ these waters for longer than I care to admit, and I’m here to share what I’m seeing.

Lake Level and Water Conditions

As of today, May 20, 2025, Lake Okeechobee’s water level is at 11.06 feet. That’s a bit lower than last year (13.47 feet) and two years ago (13.74 feet) at this time. We’re also sitting a good 2.16 feet below the period of record average. The lake has dropped 0.06 feet since yesterday. Keep an eye on those levels, folks, as they can change quick!

Weather Impact on Fishing

The forecast for today is clear skies with a light breeze. We’re looking at winds out of the West-Northwest (293 degrees) at around 11.5 mph, with gusts up to 24 mph. Temperatures are expected to reach a high of around 94 degrees Fahrenheit during the day and cool down to about 82 degrees Fahrenheit at night.

Fishing Forecast

With the lake level being lower than average and the weather heating up, here’s how it might impact your fishing today:

Bass Fishing

The lower water levels might concentrate the bass in certain areas, especially around submerged vegetation and deeper channels. Look for those transition areas where the shallow water meets the deeper water. Topwater lures early in the morning and late in the evening could be productive. As the day heats up, switch to flipping jigs and worms around heavy cover. Focus on areas with good water flow.

Key Areas: Look for bass around the Kissimmee River mouth and in the Harney Pond area.

Crappie Fishing

Crappie fishing might be a bit tougher with the clear skies and warmer water. Try fishing deeper structure with minnows or jigs. Early morning and late afternoon will be your best bet. The shade from docks and lily pads will also hold crappie looking to escape the sun.

Key Areas: Try your luck around the bridges and deeper canals.

Catfish Fishing

Catfish should still be biting, especially at night. Use stink baits, cut bait, or live bait near the bottom. Focus on areas with current or near creek mouths. The rising temperatures might make them a bit more sluggish during the day, so night fishing is your best bet.

Key Areas: Try the south end of the lake near Clewiston.

Inflows and Outflows

Total inflows into the lake are at 308 cfs, with the S65E contributing the most at 251 cfs. Outflows are significantly higher at 2324 cfs, with the S354, S77, and S352 being the primary outflow structures. This means the lake is continuing to slowly drop.

Final Thoughts

Remember to stay hydrated out there, folks! The sun is strong, and it’s easy to get dehydrated. Keep an eye on the weather and be safe out on the water. Tight lines and good fishin’!
