Lake Okeechobee Fishing Report – May 17, 2025 – Captain Joe

Howdy folks, Captain Joe here, bringing you your daily fishing report for Lake Okeechobee. Let’s dive right into what’s happening on the Big O today.

Lake Okeechobee Water Levels

As of today, May 17, 2025, the lake level is at 11.15 feet NGVD. That’s down a bit from yesterday’s 11.17 feet. Compared to last year, we’re significantly lower, with the lake sitting at 13.61 feet on the same day. Two years ago, it was at 13.81 feet. We’re also sitting about 2.12 feet below the period of record average.

The inflows are at 426 cfs, and outflows are currently unavailable due to missing data. Keep an eye on those levels, folks; they play a big part in where the fish are holding.

Weather Outlook

Looks like we’ve got scattered clouds today. The wind is blowing from the east-southeast (123 degrees) at about 10.7 mph, with gusts up to 21 mph. Temperatures are expected to reach a high of around 92°F (33.33°C) during the day, cooling down to about 80°F (26.42°C) at night.

Fishing Conditions and Tips

With the lake levels being lower than average and the warmer temperatures, here’s how it might impact your fishing today:

Bass Fishing

The lower water levels might concentrate the bass in certain areas, particularly around submerged vegetation and structure. With the scattered clouds, topwater lures early in the morning could be productive. As the sun gets higher, switch to flipping jigs and worms around heavy cover. Look for areas where the wind is pushing baitfish.

Key Areas: Look for Kissimmee grass, lily pads, and any submerged structure.

Crappie Fishing

Crappie will likely be holding in deeper water near brush piles and bridge pilings to escape the warmer surface temperatures. Use minnows or jigs fished vertically around these structures. The wind could make boat control a bit challenging, so be prepared to anchor or use a trolling motor to stay on your spot.

Key Areas: Deeper channels, bridge pilings, and submerged brush.

Bluegill Fishing

Bluegill are likely spawning in the shallows. Look for bedding areas in canals and near the shoreline. Crickets and worms under a bobber are always a good bet. The scattered clouds should provide some relief from the sun, making for a comfortable day of fishing.

Key Areas: Shallow canals, shoreline vegetation, and bedding areas.

Catfish Fishing

Catfish will be active, especially with the warmer water. Fish near the bottom with cut bait, stink bait, or live bait. Focus on areas with current or near creek mouths. Night fishing will likely be more productive as the temperatures cool down.

Key Areas: Bottom fishing in deeper holes, creek mouths, and areas with current.

General Tips for Lake Okeechobee

  • Stay Hydrated: It’s getting hot out there, folks. Bring plenty of water.
  • Sun Protection: Don’t forget your sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses.
  • Check the Weather: Conditions can change quickly, so stay updated.
  • Be Safe: Always wear a life jacket and be aware of your surroundings.

That’s all for today’s report. Tight lines and happy fishing!
