Lake Okeechobee Fishing Report – May 16, 2025 – Captain Joe

Howdy folks, Captain Joe here, bringing you your daily dose of what’s happening on and around our beloved Lake Okeechobee. Been fishin’ these waters for longer than I care to admit, and I’m here to give you the straight scoop.

Lake Okeechobee Water Levels and Conditions

As of this morning, May 16, 2025, Lake Okeechobee’s water level is hovering around -NR-. Last year at this time, we were sitting at 13.69 feet, and the year before that, 13.88 feet. The historical average for this time of year is 13.30 feet. We are currently -NR- from the historical average.

The inflows are at 325 cfs, and outflows are at 254 cfs. Pan evaporation is estimated at 0.24 inches today.

Weather Impact on Fishing Today

The weather forecast for today is calling for a partly cloudy sky with a light breeze. The wind is coming from the East-Southeast at around 9 mph, with gusts up to 19 mph. Temperatures are expected to reach a high of 92°F during the day, with a low of 70°F tonight.

How This Impacts Your Fishing

Bass Fishing

With the lake level being lower than average, finding those pre-spawn staging areas could be key. Look for submerged vegetation and structure in the Kissimmee River and near the canals. The partly cloudy skies and moderate winds might make topwater action a good bet early in the morning and late in the afternoon. Remember to adjust your lure selection based on water clarity. Focus on areas with a bit of moving water, as the bass will be more active there.

Key Areas: Kissimmee River, near the canals, submerged vegetation.

Bait Recommendations: Topwater lures, crankbaits, soft plastics.

Crappie Fishing

Crappie fishing can be tricky with fluctuating water levels. Target deeper areas around structure like bridge pilings and submerged trees. Minnows and jigs are always a good choice. With the warmer temperatures, the crappie might be holding a bit deeper to find cooler water. The wind could make boat control a little challenging, so be prepared to adjust your presentation.

Key Areas: Bridge pilings, submerged trees, deeper water.

Bait Recommendations: Minnows, jigs.

Catfish Fishing

Catfish are always a reliable target on Okeechobee. With the warmer weather, they’ll be actively feeding. Use stink baits, cut bait, or live bait near the bottom. Focus on areas with current or near creek mouths. The wind shouldn’t impact catfish fishing too much, but be mindful of your anchor placement.

Key Areas: Areas with current, creek mouths, bottom structure.

Bait Recommendations: Stink baits, cut bait, live bait.

General Tips for Lake Okeechobee Fishing

  • Stay Hydrated: It’s gonna be a warm one out there, so bring plenty of water.
  • Sun Protection: Don’t forget your sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses.
  • Check Your Gear: Make sure your lines are fresh and your hooks are sharp.

That’s all for today’s report, folks. Tight lines and safe fishing!
