______________________________________________________________________________ (I) - Flows preceeded by "I" signify an instantaneous flow computed from the single value reported for the day ______________________________________________________________________________ * On 11 May 1999, Lake Okeechobee Elevation was switched from Instantaneous 2400 value to an average-daily lake average. On 14 Mar 2001, due to the isolation of various gages within the standard 10 stations, the average of the interior 4 station gages was used as the Lake Okeechobee Elevation. On 05 November 2010, Lake Okeechobee Elevation was switched to a 9 gage mix of interior and edge gages to obtain a more reliable representation of the lake level. On 09 May 2011, Lake Okeechobee Elevation was switched to a 8 gage mix of interior and edge gages to obtain a more reliable representation of the lake level due to isolation of S135 from low lake levels. Today Lake Okechobee elevation is determined from the 4 Int & 4 Edge stations ++ For more information see the Jacksonville District Navigation website at http://www.saj.usace.army.mil/ $ For information regarding Lake Okeechobee Service Area water restrictions please refer to www.sfwmd.gov ______________________________________________________________________________ Report Generated 13MAY2025 @ 08:38 ** Preliminary Data - Subject to Revision **
Unfortunately, the lake level data is currently unavailable. However, we can look at the weather forecast to get an idea of what to expect.
Weather Forecast and Fishing Impact
The forecast for today, May 12th, calls for rain. We’re expecting around 1.22mm of rain. The wind will be blowing from the west (271 degrees) at about 9.5 mph, with gusts up to 23 mph. The high for today will be around 91°F, with a low of 70°F.
Bass Fishing
With the rain and wind, bass fishing could be a bit challenging today. The increased cloud cover might encourage some bass to move into shallower waters, but the wind could make boat control difficult. Focus on areas with submerged vegetation or structure that provide shelter from the wind. Topwater lures early in the morning could be productive if the wind isn’t too strong. As the day progresses, switch to flipping jigs or using Texas-rigged worms around heavy cover. The key will be finding areas where the bass are holding tight to avoid the wind and current.
Crappie Fishing
The crappie fishing may be affected by the wind as well. Look for crappie around deeper structures like brush piles or submerged trees. Minnows and jigs are always a good bet. The rain might also push them a bit deeper, so adjust your presentation accordingly. With the wind, drifting can be difficult, so consider anchoring or using a trolling motor to maintain your position.
Other Species
Don’t forget about the other species in Lake Okeechobee! Bluegill and shellcracker fishing can be good in the canals and around lily pads. Use live worms or crickets for best results. Catfish are always a possibility, especially after a rain. Try fishing with stink bait or cut bait on the bottom.
Captain Joe’s Tip of the Day
With the wind picking up, remember to prioritize safety. Make sure your boat is properly equipped with life jackets and that you’re aware of your surroundings. The lake can get rough quickly, so be prepared to head back to the ramp if necessary.
That’s all for today’s report. Tight lines and stay safe out there!
Your friend,
Captain Joe
