Lake Okeechobee Fishing Report: Captain Joe’s Insights – May 9, 2025

Lake Okeechobee Fishing Report – May 9, 2025 – With Captain Joe

Howdy folks, Captain Joe here, bringing you your daily dose of what’s happening on and around our beloved Lake Okeechobee. Let’s dive right into it, shall we?

Lake Level and Water Conditions

As of today, May 9, 2025, Lake Okeechobee’s elevation is at 11.05 feet NGVD. That’s down a bit from yesterday (11.08 feet) and significantly lower than this time last year (13.90 feet) and two years ago (14.09 feet). We’re sitting about 2.36 feet below the period of record average. The lake is still dropping, but the rate has slowed.

The inflows are minimal at 71 cfs, mainly from S65E. Outflows are significantly higher at 2353 cfs, with S351, S352, S354, and S77 contributing the most. This outflow is likely to continue to impact water clarity in certain areas, especially near the outflow structures.

Weather Impact on Fishing Today

Looks like we’re in for a wet one today. The forecast calls for heavy rain. Winds will be coming from the west at around 15 mph, with gusts up to 19 mph. The high for today is around 87 degrees Fahrenheit, with a low around 76.

Fishing Forecast

Given the lake levels and the weather conditions, here’s what I’m expecting for today’s fishing:

Bass Fishing

The heavy rain will likely muddy up the water in many areas, especially in the Kissimmee River and near the canals. This can make sight fishing tough. Focus on using lures that create vibration and sound, like spinnerbaits, crankbaits, and chatterbaits. Fish the edges of grass lines and any available cover. The bass will be looking for ambush points in the stained water. With the lake level being lower than usual, expect to find bass further out from the shoreline than normal. Look for submerged vegetation and structure.

Crappie Fishing

Crappie fishing might be a bit tougher with the rain and wind. Try fishing deeper brush piles and submerged structure with minnows or jigs. The stained water might push the crappie a bit deeper. Focus on areas with less wind and current.

Catfish Fishing

Catfish should be biting well, especially after the rain. Use stink baits, cut bait, or live bait near the bottom in areas with current. The influx of fresh water can often trigger catfish to feed more actively. Target areas near creek mouths and canals.

Captain Joe’s Tip of the Day

Don’t let the rain scare you off! Sometimes the best fishing happens when the weather is less than ideal. Just be sure to stay safe, watch the weather, and wear your rain gear. And always let someone know where you’re going and when you expect to be back.

Tight lines and safe fishing, folks!

– Captain Joe
