Lake Okeechobee Fishing Report – May 3rd, 2025
Howdy folks, Captain Joe here, back with your Lake Okeechobee fishing update. Let’s dive into what’s happening on the Big O.
Lake Level and Conditions
The lake’s sitting at 11.20 feet NGVD today. That’s down a good bit from 14.16 feet this time last year and 14.28 feet two years ago. We’re definitely seeing the impact of the drier conditions. The water’s moving out pretty good, with outflows significantly higher than inflows. The S-77 is pushing a lot of water out towards the Caloosahatchee, and the S-308 is doing its part towards the St. Lucie.
Weather Forecast and Impact on Fishing
The forecast for today calls for moderate rain and a temperature high of 84°F (29°C). Winds are expected out of the south at around 18 mph (8 m/s) with gusts up to 22 mph (10 m/s). This could make for some choppy conditions out on the open water, so be careful out there. The rain might stir things up a bit and get the fish biting.
Fishing Outlook
Bass: With the lower water levels, the bass are likely concentrated in the remaining vegetation and along the edges of the drop-offs. Flipping and pitching creature baits or using spinnerbaits around the thicker cover should be productive. The wind might make it tough to fish topwater, but if you can find a calmer area, give it a shot.
Crappie: Look for crappie around deeper brush piles and submerged structure. Minnows or small jigs fished vertically will be your best bet. The wind might make it a little tricky to stay on top of them, but they should still be biting.
Bluegill: Bluegill are usually hanging around the shallower areas with vegetation. Crickets or small worms under a bobber should work well. If the wind is too strong, try fishing closer to the shore or in protected areas.
That’s the latest from Lake Okeechobee. Stay safe out there, and tight lines!
