Howdy folks, Captain Joe here, bringing you your daily dose of what’s happening on our beloved Big O. Been fishin’ these waters for longer than I care to admit, and I’ve seen it all. Let’s dive right into what today’s report means for your fishing trip.

Lake Okeechobee Water Levels & Conditions

The latest data from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers shows the lake elevation at 12.20 ft-NGVD. That’s down from last year’s 13.92 ft-NGVD and significantly lower than two years ago at 15.34 ft-NGVD. We’re about 1.72 feet below the period of record average. The lake level has risen slightly from yesterday’s 12.19, up 0.01 feet.

   * On 11 May 1999, Lake Okeechobee Elevation was switched from
     Instantaneous 2400 value to an average-daily lake average.
     On 14 Mar 2001, due to the isolation of various gages within the standard
     10 stations, the average of the interior 4 station gages was used
     as the Lake Okeechobee Elevation.
     On 05 November 2010,  Lake Okeechobee Elevation was switched to a 9 gage
     mix of interior and edge gages to obtain a more reliable representation
     of the lake level.
     On 09 May 2011,  Lake Okeechobee Elevation was switched to a 8 gage
     mix of interior and edge gages to obtain a more reliable representation
     of the lake level due to isolation of S135 from low lake levels.

Weather Impact on Fishing Today

Looks like we’ve got some rain in the forecast. The weather forecast for today, August 12th, predicts about 2.55mm of rain (approximately 0.1 inches). How This Impacts Fishing:

  • Bass Fishing: With the rain and wind, bass might be seeking shelter. Focus on areas with heavy cover like grass lines, lily pads, and submerged vegetation. Topwater lures early in the morning before the heavier rain could be productive. As the day goes on, switch to slower presentations like Texas-rigged worms or jigs.

  • Water Clarity: With recent rains, expect some areas to have stained or murky water. Adjust your lure colors accordingly – darker colors work well in murky water.
  • Wind Direction: Pay attention to wind direction. Fish tend to congregate on the windward side of the lake where the wind pushes baitfish.
  • Safety First: With the wind and potential for storms, always check your safety gear and be prepared to head back to the ramp if conditions worsen.
